"Daisy" the Rooster

Another one I think we're going to have to change them name of. I'm not 100 percent it's a rooster. I also have no idea what breed his is mixed from.

The new perch

This is one of the Rhode Island Red pullets we bought from the feed store in Wilsonville (very nice folks by the way!). She is a week or so younger than the chicks we hatched here but fits in quite well. She was one of the first chicks to start roosting on the perch I added to the brooder. Very cute!

"Kung Pow" the Marans pullet

Sweet as sugar! This little Marans chick loves to be held and is the first one to come to the door of the brooder. She is supposed to be a Marans and hatched from a very, very dark chocolate egg.

Homemade Butter

Get ready kids! I have been teasing my kids for quite some time now that we would make homemade butter in class. We have been reading Little House in the Big Woods and they talk about real homemade butter. Butter is easily made from heavy cream and tastes really good. Several people brought in baby food jars for our project and I think we now have enough. Tonight I decided to do a "trial run" and make some to be sure I remembered how to do it. Tadaa!

Lacie and I enjoyed the homemade butter on our bread tonight.  It was delicious!  Can't wait to do this in class.  The only thing I think I will change is the baby food jars.  Too much trouble!  I think we will make it in a quart jar and pass around the shaking jar.

James Spann's Weather on Ustream

When I got up this morning and checked the rankings for First in Math, I was surprised to find that I had students playing since school was out on Friday!  I love, love, love to see them earning stickers!  Great job Team VIVID.  You make me proud!

Chick Detective Project

This picture is of the two that are mutts.  I think they are both roosters.
This little guy is supposed to be a black ameracauna.
I think australorp "A"
I think Australorp "B"
I think this is my other marans.  I'm guessing she is black and will not be blue copper. The picture below is a picture of her feet.  Her underbelly is grey and is solid back on top with a little grey tip on wings.
This pictures below are of the one that is grey (Marans) with pink feet and feathered legs.  I think this one will be splash and not blue copper.
And just for fun....this is the other Mutt that I hatched which I think is ALSO a rooster.  All the suspected roosters are the ones who like to be held the most.  Strange.

Spring Break!

School will be closed March 14-18 for Spring Break!  Have a safe, fun and relaxing rest from school.  Come back refreshed because we still have lots of learning to do.

Movie and Popcorn Party!

On Friday, we enjoyed a movie and popcorn party hosted by Ms. Head for winning the "Cash for Class" challenge.  It was great fun to kick back and relax that afternoon as we prepared ourselves for SPRING BREAK!

"PODucate ME"

The grant for a Sycamore sound studio has been submitted! Hopefully, we will win and be able to fund our new studio so our entire school can enjoy podcasting. If we win, we will be receiving a new mac book, speakers, headphones, an ipad and sound mixing equipment. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Day 20 ~ First PIP

"Berta" (#17) is our first egg to pip!  I wish everyone could hear her chirping....she's working hard to get out of that shell.

Day 20 of Chick Hatch!

Today is day 20 of the chick hatching project.  We've learned quite a lot from our project this month.  Hopefully, either today or tomorrow we will get to see the results of our patient waiting!  13 eggs remain in the incubator and we're hoping for 13 happy, healthy chicks!
